1974 Toyota Land Cruiser

$

0

This 1974 Toyota Land Cruiser (chassis FJ40182175) is described as recently restored and seems quite clean. The stock other than an OME suspension lift look was made famous by CCOT and we have grown to love it, and ’74 was a good year because you got the 4-speed transmission and late style taillights. Find it here on eBay in Fort Worth, Texas for $31,990 OBO.

This 1972 Blazer (chassis CKE102F174390) is said to be rust-free apart from some minor bubbling underneath the doors, and has previously had its rockers replaced. The paint is estimated to be about ten years old but most of the interior is fresh in factory white vinyl and plaid, though the rear bench remains original. It’s said to run well and looks like a perfectly decent driver, though A/C is currently inop. Find it here on eBay in Houston, Texas with reserve met and bidding at $11,100.

Rare in the USA: 1962 Holden EK Utility

This 1962 Holden EK Ute is an unusual find in North America, and still wears Australian plates. The truck seems to be in excellent condition, though we’d like some undercarriage photos to be certain. This Ute is decidedly Spartan, though that wouldn’t matter, as it is sure to attract a crowd anywhere it goes. Find it here on eBay in Saint Charles, Missouri.

1962 Holden EK Utility

From the B-pillars forward, this EK reminds of Chevrolets of the late 50′s, fittingly. Rearward, however, the slab-sided truck bed is unmistakable. The period pale yellow finish appears to be in great shape, as it has been repainted at least once. All of the brightwork seems to be clean, thankfully, as chasing those sorts of bits from the other side of the globe could be a Herculean task.

1962 Holden EK Utility

Inside, all is well. The wide steel dash, with Detroit-style gauges and a big Bakelite steering wheel look familiar to anyone who’s spent time in an old Chevy. The upholstery on the door cards looks a bit off, however, as it appears to have an odd sheen or nap depending on how it is brushed or even touched. We are unsure if this is the factory material or something done aftermarket–and if it is done post works, restoring to an original style material shouldn’t be too challenging.

1962 Holden EK Utility

Under the hood, the 2.3 liter inline six looks all of its’ sixty-plus years. Interestingly, the seller includes a spare engine and transmission, so we wonder what problems lurk. It may be all cosmetic–the seller claims that the truck runs perfectly.

1962 Holden EK Utility

This Aussie ute is not for the timid. Non-enthusiasts will question this “El Camino”. Others will have never heard of Holden. Petrolheads will crowd around wanting to chat. This is a vehicle that will be a treat for the right buyer, however, one who sees the beauty in straightfoward, almost pedestrian cars from other lands.

This 1988 Toyota Hilux 4×4 doublecab diesel is a rarity in the USA, as they were never imported when new. This is only the second we have seen on offer in the USA in the 2nd-gen body style, and we recently bought a similar 1st-gen ’82 model (link) and are loving it. People do double-takes all day long. Find it here on Craigslist in Charlotte, North Carolina for $16k. Special thanks to BaT reader Tom M. for this submission!

BaT Exclusive: Clean 1997 Toyota Land Cruiser FZJ80

This 1997 Toyota Land Cruiser (VIN JT3HJ85J1V0182836) was originally sold in Bend, Oregon and it has remained in Oregon its entire life. The current seller has had it for two years and bought it because of how exceptionally clean it is, both inside and out. In early 2013 he added the OME suspension, ARB bull bar, Warn XD9000 winch, and Goodyear tires on FJ Cruiser wheels, enhancing the look and capability in a way we really like. It is now available in Portland, Oregon for $14k obo.

1997 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ80 For Sale Front

The truck had factory running boards, which the seller removed, but they remain in good shape and are included. We like it better without, and the only other exterior equipment we would at ad this point is a rear swing-out bumper from 4x4Labs or Slee Off Road. The seller says that the underbody and frame are in good shape, and although not shown in the photos, the second rear jump-seat is included.

1997 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ80 For Sale Cargo

What sets this FJ80 apart is the condition of the body and the leather interior. Most FJ80s have been ridden very hard and show it in their front seats, carpets, and exterior defects. Even at 184k miles, this truck has an impressive interior. All gauges work and electric windows work, though the driver’s window is slow to go back up. This one does not have heated seats.

1997 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ80 For Sale Interior

In the last two years, it’s had the following maintenance or upgrades performed:

  • 10/9/13 — Five Goodyear Duratrac tires 285/70/17 installed on FJ Cruiser rims
  • 7/16/13 — Tune up: Distributor cap, rotor, spark plugs, spark plug wires
  • 4/16/13 — Transmission flush
  • 3/22/13 — New radiator, thermostat, and water pump
  • 3/04/13 — ARB front bumper and WARN XD9000 winch installed
  • 3/06/13 — Install 2.5′ OME lift kit, including springs, shocks, struts, bushings, etc.
  • 11/6/12 — Rebuild of both front axle knuckles
  • 11/6/12 — Front and rear brake pads and rotors replaced
  • 5/16/12 — New AC compressor and AC system service

Not noted are the oil changes performed at 3 month intervals regardless of mileage. The seller says it runs like a top.  He also states that the brakes are strong, power is ample, and the new suspension rides great.

1997 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ80 For Sale Engine

The seller notes only two issues with the truck at present: “To the best of my knowledge, the truck only has a couple issues: Since the front axle rebuild, the left front CV clicks at full-lock lefthand turns. My shop noticed this after the front axle was all reassembled and assured me the CV was in good condition when it was out. I was told not to sweat it. Also, the radio antenna is slightly bent and doesn’t go down all the way.”

Says the seller: “As much as it pains me to sell it, it’s time to part ways. The Cruiser has been my second vehicle. I’ve recently moved into downtown Portland and rather than see it collect dust in a subterranean parking structure, I’d like see it go to a new home.”

This 1980 Toyota 4×4 DLX pick-up (chassis RN47034606) is an unusual model to see so thoroughly restored, and the seller shows many good in-process photos in his gallery. The bulletproof factory 20R engine was rebuilt and is now matched to a 5-speed transmission. The factory white steel wheels come with the sale, but we also like how the grey alloys were matched to the body stripes. Find this one here on eBay in Rainier, Oregon. This 1983 Range Rover 2-door was recently imported from The Netherlands, and features Rostyle wheels, a manual transmission, and left-hand-drive. It has a carbureted V8, and the seller says he will swap in a turbo-diesel at additional cost. These are less practical than the 4-doors, but we like the rarity factory of a version that was never sold in the USA. Find it here on Craigslist in Portland, Oregon for $13,900.

BaT Exclusive: Proven 1973 Volkswagen Type 181 Thing

$

0

This 1973 VW Type 181 Thing (chassis 1832841011) has been with the current third owner for over 11 years. It’s described as a cared for, mechanically sorted driver with many tasteful and functional upgrades, particularly a specialized engine built by the famed, departed “Boston Bob” Donalds. The seller freely admits there are several cosmetic defaults, and details them in the flickr gallery link below, but adds that this Thing has been built to drive and retains much of its original orange paint. A 4,800 mile, coast-to-coast trip in 2007 is said to have gone by without a single issue, with another, 10-day Death Valley drive taking place in 2011. An occasional around-town driver since then, it’s now available in San Francisco, California for $12,500.

1973-Volkswagen-Type-181-Thing-Front

Paint is mostly factory, aside from a few touch-ups accumulated during the past 41 years of use. The left rocker shows a small hole where the seller cut out some rust, but has been left intentionally open to demonstrate the limited extent of the issue. Otherwise, corrosion is limited to some bubbling and peeling on the windshield frame (non-structural) and fenders, a common issue stemming from the way the fenders were connected to the bumpers (a design flaw, in the seller’s opinion). The underbody looks clean and straight, and there is no known non-factory filler, so the factory spot welds and seams are in-tact and visible. Wheels are vintage Jackman heavy-duty off-road units that suit the car well. They are wrapped in Toyo Open-Country A/T tires (205/70R15) with plenty of tread life left. Included in sale are a set of used factory running boards (not installed), and a bucket or two of spare & maintenance parts.

1973 Volkswagen Type 181 Thing

Inside, high-back Beetle seats have been welded to the original Thing pedestals to maintain seat height, and the car includes the original teak duck boards up front. The top is brand new, installed in January 2014, and custom-made from multi-layer Stayfast canvas ($650.00). Also installed as-new in January 2014 is a heavy duty Thing Shop top frame ($750.00). Underneath, the factory 5-point roll bar retains much of its original padding. Windows are also from the Thing Shop and date from 2006, while the BN4 gas-fired heater was rebuilt by “Heater Man” prior to the seller’s ownership and is in great (safe) working order. The only electrical issue is that the horn button doesn’t work. Typically, this is a broken ground wire that jumps the column disk. The odometer stopped on the X-Country trip in 2007, just shy of 99k. The car is estimated to have approximately 110,000 miles on the clock, and about 20,000 on the engine.

1973 Volkswagen Type 181 Thing

The engine is said to run wonderfully, and is speculated to be one of the smoothest running Type 1 motors around. Boston Bob’s build included custom-milled semi-hemispherical combustion chambers, sodium-filled valves, hardened valve seats, a mild cam, and counterweighted crankshaft. Additionally, the engine was blueprinted and has received regular, synthetic oil changes since completion. The carburetor is a stock-sized and properly-jetted Solex PICT-34, and the distributor is a Pertronix Billet unit (not to be confused with their ignitor product). Currently, there are no heat risers installed, because the car lives in a Mediterranean climate, but will be included in a bucket of spare parts. Earlier this year an OEM style stainless exhaust system was fitted ($950.00), and though power is down slightly because of restriction, the seller says it’s about as quiet as a Thing can be.

1973 Volkswagen Type 181 Thing

The original transaxle was replaced in 2007 with a freeway geared Rancho box, rear torsion bars and suspension bushes were replaced three years ago, four-wheel coil-over units also date from 2011, and front brakes are upgraded discs. Check out the Vimeo film he put together chronicling the 1800-mile trip around California in 2011 :

A reluctant sale is forced by lack of time; citing two young children, a bicycle commute, and the need to free up garage space for things like strollers and family stuff. The days of top-down road trips are over for the next 5-7 years, until the kids are old enough to tolerate life on the road in a Thing.

The seller says a written stipulation of the sale will state that the seller is given first right of refusal, should the car come up for sale again. Seller is happy to field any questions you may have, and send photos that aren’t already in the flickr gallery below.

1973 Volkswagen Type 181 Thing

Adds the seller: “It’s very important to me this car goes to a good new steward—someone who’ll drive it far and wide as it was designed to do!” Bravo, seller.

All Angles: 1978 Mercedes Benz Unimog U1300L

$

This 1978 Unimog U1300L (chassis 43511510000869) is a bit of a mish-mash with a U1500 cab and 5.7 liter OM352A turbodiesel six cylinder, but overall seems like a good driver that’s not too clean to use as originally intended. These later body style ‘Mogs are relatively rare in the US compared to the earlier, more rounded 404, and we think this one would look great parked next to a W124 or W201 or our own front door. Find it here on eBay in La Junta, Colorado for $28,500 OBO.

All Angles: 1978 Mercedes Benz Unimog U1300L

The rear cab wall and pillars seem to indicate it was originally painted a minty green, and the seller says that the red it currently wears dates to 2006 or so. The bottom, front corner of the driver’s side shows some rust and cracking, with some more evident on the passenger side B-pillar—both said to be former sites of repair. Overall, though, the truck looks pretty solid and straight for a heavy duty workhorse. The bed is said to have fresh one inch thick plywood, and the whole thing has been covered in spray-on bedliner.

All Angles: 1978 Mercedes Benz Unimog U1300L

Inside the minimal but appealingly industrial switchgear, instrumentation, and controls seem to be built to withstand several more decades of use. A commanding view over the short hood looks like it’d be a lot of fun in traffic, and seats appear to be air-sprung to compensate for what’s likely to be quite a stiff ride.

All Angles: 1978 Mercedes Benz Unimog U1300L

The motor isn’t pictured, but an odometer shot shows 116,359 kilometers—virtually the break-in period for an MB diesel, but being from a different cab we’re not sure how accurate that figure is. Still, the seller quotes 72k miles, approximately the same number in English, so we’d want to clear this up before bidding. Shifts are through a manual 8-speed, and portal axles give some seriously impressive ground clearance. The huge 365/80R20 Continental tires are said to have about 70% tread remaining and fill out the big arches very nicely.

All Angles: 1978 Mercedes Benz Unimog U1300L

We wish we had an excuse to own a Unimog, but based on the handful of freshly waxed ones we’ve seen running around suburban California streets over the years it’s apparent many don’t need one. We hope this one’s put to good use though, and imagine seeing it axle deep in mud or crawling up a craggy 45 degree slope.
